First Sunday of Advent

stubborn...stubborn...stubborn...

This Sunday is the first day of Advent, a word which means ‘arrival’ or ‘coming’. In this season we celebrate the three fold coming of Christ: as a human person in history; as someone who is always present with us; and as the one who will come in majesty to judge us at the end of time. Advent is a season of paradox, a season of penance and joy. This is seen by the fact that we have no Gloria in Advent, but we still sing the ‘alleluia’. In our Advent wreath we have three purple candles to remind of penance, and one pink candle to remind us of our joyful hope, of looking forward to Christ’s birth and celebrating that Jesus is both human and our almighty God.

An Advent Prayer
O lord as we prepare for Christmas, our family needs the warmth of Your love and our minds are searching for the light of Your truth. Increase our longing for Christ our Savior and give us the strength to grow in love with those who share our life. Then we shall always be ready for the coming of Your Son, who is Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
